Education and Training
Dr. Ives graduated with honors from the University of Colorado Boulder with a degree in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology. He went on to complete medical school at the University of Michigan, graduating at the top of his class with a specialization in Innovation and Entrepreneurship. He was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society.
Dr. Ives then pursued residency in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Southern California, where he trained at world-class institutions including Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, and Kaiser Permanente. Following residency, Dr. Ives completed a fellowship in Facial Plastic Surgery at the renowned Lasky Clinic in Beverly Hills. During his residency and fellowship, Dr. Ives received extensive training in advanced craniofacial procedures.

Dr. Ives’ research has focused extensively on advancing gender-affirming surgical care. He has published studies on facial feminization techniques, hairline feminization, and the impact of gender-affirming mastectomy on quality of life. In addition to his private practice, Dr. Ives is part of the teaching faculty for the USC Plastic Surgery Residency Program. A consultation is required to determine pricing. Prices generally include OR, anesthesia, and implant costs. Combined procedures may be discounted. Payment methods accepted: Cash, check, credit card, medical financing (CareCredit), and insurance.
Insurance Coverage
- IvesMD is one of the first practices in California to be in-network with Blue Shield of California for gender-affirming facial, chest and hair transplant surgeries. (This includes out-of-state Blue Cross/Blue Shield plans with “suitcase” logo.)
- IvesMD can negotiate out-of-network letters of agreement (LOA) with most insurance companies, including some Medicaid programs.
- IvesMD is not in-network with government insurance.

Surgery Requirements
Dr. Ives is a Member of WPATH and follows its Standards of Care. One mental health letter is required for gender-affirming facial and chest surgery, even for self-pay. No letters are required for self-pay body contouring.
Consultations with Dr. Ives
Consultations are available both virtually and in-person. The consultation fee is $200. For in-network consultations, the consultation fee is waived; instead, your standard specialist copay will apply. Patients can typically be seen for consultation within 1–3 weeks, with surgery dates available in 3–4 weeks.
Approximately 25–50% of Dr. Ives’ patients are transgender or nonbinary. His practice embraces gender-affirming care through inclusive intake forms, a posted nondiscrimination policy, staff sensitivity training, and patient-centered communication.
