Gender-Affirming Surgery at the University of Iowa

Dr. Daniel J. Freet, MD, FACS, is a board-certified Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon who now practices at the University of Iowa, where he offers a range of gender-affirming surgeries in a compassionate, inclusive setting. With years of experience and advanced microsurgical training, Dr. Freet performs masculinizing and feminizing procedures, including Top Surgery, Facial Gender Surgery, and Phalloplasty.

As part of the University of Iowa Health Care LGBTQ Clinic, Dr. Freet is a key member of a multidisciplinary team that provides comprehensive transgender care. This nationally recognized program offers coordinated access to surgeons, primary care physicians, mental health professionals, and pharmacists—all dedicated to supporting transgender and gender-diverse patients throughout their gender-affirmation journey.

Dr. Freet is affiliated with the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics and contributes to resident and fellow training in plastic and reconstructive surgery. His clinical interests include complex microsurgical reconstruction, gender-affirming surgery, and multidisciplinary surgical care.

Originally from San Diego, Dr. Freet received his medical degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine, and went on to complete both general and plastic surgery residencies at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, McGovern Medical Center. He is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).

Fellows are “board-certified surgeons whose education, training, professional qualifications, surgical competence, and ethical conduct are reviewed and consistent with the high standards of the American College of Surgeons. Not all surgeons are accepted as Fellows.” (www.facs.org)

Dr. Freet maintains active membership in the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) and is also a member of the World Professional Association of Transgender Health (WPATH).

Surgery Requirements
Dr. Freet follows the WPATH Standards of Care and letters recommending surgery are required.

Dr. Freet accepts a range of insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. Patients are encouraged to confirm specific coverage directly with the University of Iowa Health Care billing department.
