Dr. John Henry Pang, MD is a double board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon who performs gender-affirming genital, face and chest reconstruction surgeries. In 2019, Dr. Pang completed the intensive Transgender Surgery Fellowship training program at Mount Sinai. Now an associate surgeon at Align Surgical in San Francisco, Dr. Pang’s practice is dedicated to providing specialized care to the transgender and gender-nonconforming communities.
Dr. Pang obtained his medical degree at University of Hawaii, John A. Burns School of Medicine. He completed a general surgery residency at Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia and a plastic and reconstructive surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh, one of the top plastic surgery residencies in the country. After his internship at Mt. Zion Hospital, University of California at San Francisco, Dr. Pang completed fellowship training in gender-affirming surgery at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York.
Dr. Pang maintains membership in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and is also a member of the American Board of Surgery and the World Professional Association of Transgender Health (WPATH).
Dr. Pang is active in transgender surgery clinical outcomes research and has received multiple awards for his research and leadership in this field. He has co-authored a number of peer-reviewed academic papers on Gender Surgery. Dr. Pang’s latest research is focused on Vaginoplasty revisions and insurance coverage for Facial Feminization surgeries.
Feminizing Surgery
Dr. Pang specializes in Vaginoplasty, including the Penile Inversion, Peritoneal and Sigmoid Colon methods. This surgery transforms male genitalia into a functional and sensate vagina. Dr. Pang takes great care in creating the vagina as well as an aesthetically pleasing vulva with labia, a clitoris and clitoral hood. The procedure is associated with excellent patient satisfaction. Dr. Pang also has specialized training in transgender urology and has the experience and knowledge to perform urological repairs and revisions, if required.

Masculinization Surgery
Dr. Pang offers multiple methods of Top Surgery: Double Incision, Peri-Areolar, Keyhole and Buttonhole. As a member of Align Surgical’s FTM bottom surgery team, he performs both Vaginectomy and Scrotoplasty. He also offers Body and Facial Masculinization procedures.
Dr. Pang performs surgeries at Marin Health Medical Center, California Pacific Medical Center, St. Francis Hospital Surgery Facility and Post Street Surgery Center.
Surgery Eligibility
- Hormone therapy for one year for bottom surgery.
- Mental health letter requirements per WPATH guidelines.
- Top Surgery: 18 years+ or 17 years with parental consent.
- Mammogram is required for Top Surgery patients who are 50 years and older.
- No bottom surgery for minors.
Insurance & Medicaid
Dr. Pang accepts insurance, including Blue Cross and Blue Shield. Align Surgical can do single case agreements with insurance companies that we are not contracted with. Dr. Pang also accepts some managed Medi-Cal plans.
Booking a Consultation
Dr. Pang is available for phone, virtual and in-person consultations for a fee of $50. (If you have insurance, this fee will be billed to your plan.) The wait time for a consult is 4-6 weeks. A surgery date can usually be booked approximately two months following consultation. Se habla Español.
