Gender Affirming Surgery at the University of Minnesota

Nicholas Kim, MD, is a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon and gender affirming surgery expert who offers Gender Reassignment Surgery procedures at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Dr. Kim performs both male-to-female and female-to-male surgery, including Breast Augmentation, Vaginoplasty and Vulvoplasty, Top Surgery and Phalloplasty.

Dr. Kim earned a medical degree from University of Minnesota Medical School and completed a residency at Medical College of Wisconsin. He gained specialized gender surgery expertise from a fellowship at Gent University Hospital in Belgium. Dr. Kim is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Plastics and Reconstruction at the University of Minnesota Medical Center in Minneapolis.

Dr. Kim maintains active membership in the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) and is also a member of the World Professional Association of Transgender Health (WPATH).

FTM Surgery in Minnesota
Dr. Kim offers multiple methods of Top Surgery for trans masculine and non-binary individuals, including Keyhole and Double Incision with or without nipple grafts. Dr. Kim’s multidisciplinary team includes several excellent OB/GYNs who can perform Hysterectomy:

Dr. Kim also performs microsurgical Phalloplasty, using either the forearm (RFF) or thigh (ALT) donor sites. Dr. Kim performs the microsurgery and plastic surgery aspects of Phalloplasty. He works with two Urologists who assist by completing the urethroplasty and penile implant surgeries.

Surgery Requirements
Dr. Kim follows World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) guidelines for surgery for minors and adults, as well as mammography protocols of the American Cancer Society.

  • Letter of recommendation from a psychologist or other mental health professional
  • Mammograms prior to top surgery are often required based on the surgeon’s evaluation
  • Dr. Kim will operate on minors with parental consent.

Financing & Insurance
Credit cards, checks and insurance from all major insurance companies are accepted. Medicare and Medicaid are also accepted but individual plans determine if Dr. Kim is in-network or not. Specific financial questions and issues are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
