Dr. Dany Hanna

Urologist and Fellowship-Trained Gender Surgeon Focused Exclusively on Providing Gender-Affirming Surgery in Texas

Dr. Dany Hanna, DO is a Urologist and fellowship-trained Gender Surgeon who works exclusively with transgender and non-binary patients at the Hanna Gender Center in Dallas, Texas. He completed a yearlong fellowship in gender-affirming surgery and also trained with the renowned Dr. Miroslav Djordjevic in Belgrade, Serbia. Dr. Hanna specializes in Vaginoplasty and also offers Nullification, Metoidioplasty, Top Surgery and Breast Augmentation.

Dr. Hanna obtained a Bachelor of Science from Worcester State University and a Master of Biomedical Sciences from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (now Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences.) He earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine at the University of New England, a school that featured a comprehensive LGBTQ curriculum for medical students. He graduated in the top of his class and served as Class President for all four years. Dr. Hanna subsequently moved to Philadelphia and trained in general surgery at Hahnemann Hospital, followed by a residency in urology at Bryn Mawr Hospital, where he served as chief resident.

Dr. Hanna got “hooked” on gender-affirming surgery after observing a bottom surgery procedure during his general surgery training.

“I enjoyed the reconstructive aspects of it. As opposed to cancer surgery or some other process, where you’re cutting something out of the body, I like the fact that I was able to rearrange and personalize existing anatomy to better reflect the true individual inside, ” said Dr. Hanna. “Taking care of the patients, taking down the dressings, seeing the smiles on the patients’ faces, I really felt like I was making a difference.”

Dr. Hanna is one of few surgeons in the United States who has completed a yearlong fellowship in Gender Surgery. He has also traveled to Belgrade, Serbia to learn advanced techniques in gender-affirming genital surgery with Dr. Miroslav Djordjevic, a pioneering Gender Surgeon and leader in urogenital reconstructive surgery.

In 2005, Dr. Hanna enlisted in the Army National Guard, serving as an Infantryman. He was commissioned as an officer and trained at the US Army Military Intelligence Center of Excellence at Fort Huachuca, and went on to serve as a tactical intelligence officer with the 223rd Military Intelligence Company in Massachusetts. He later served as the Battalion Surgeon for 1-181st Infantry in the Massachusetts Army National Guard.

Dr. Hanna is a member of the World Professional Association of Transgender Health (WPATH) and the American Urological Association. He serves as the Medical Advisor for the Transgender Military Advocacy Organization SPARTA, and is involved with transgender community outreach groups.

5 Stars “Dr. Hanna is an artist with a scalpel, as well as a kind and caring person. He and his staff have been there for me before, during and after surgery. I couldn’t be more pleased with the work they’ve done.” – Michelle W.

Feminizing Surgery in Texas

Dr. Hanna has received in-depth training over a full year in the latest Vaginoplasty techniques. He performs Penile Inversion Vaginoplasty with follicular cautery, which eliminates the need for painful and expensive pre-operative hair removal. The procedure results in minimal scarring, a natural looking appearance and sufficient depth for intercourse, while minimizing the risks of long term complications compared to other Vaginoplasty techniques. Dr. Hanna  sometimes uses the tunica vaginalis as an alternative to a peritoneal graft that has some peritoneal-like qualities without having to do more invasive abdominal surgery.

Dr. Hanna offers Orchiectomy either as a part of the Vaginoplasty procedure or as a standalone procedure.

For those who are not concerned with having a vaginal canal but do desire feminine appearing genitals, Dr. Hanna offers Vulvoplasty. This procedure uses existing genital tissue to create a vulva with a clitoris and labia. Vulvoplasty is less invasive than Vaginoplasty, has an easier recovery and doesn’t require a dilation regimen. It is therefore well-suited for those who have concerns about age and recovery or have higher risk factors associated with previous radical prostatectomy, pelvic radiation or cardiovascular health. Additionally, people who identify as non-binary may feel that Vulvoplasty is more appropriate for their needs.

Dr. Hanna also offers Nullification surgery.

While estrogen hormone therapy can help with breast development, surgery is often required to achieve a truly feminine breast contour. Dr. Hanna is well-versed in the technical nuances of achieving natural looking results with gender-affirming Breast Augmentation. He generally recommends silicone breast implants for their natural look and feel. Dr. Hanna will work with you to identify the most appropriate sized implants based on your body and surgery goals. Breast Augmentation can be done at the same time as feminizing genital procedures.

5 Stars “Dr. Hanna and his staff were amazing, they are the most comforting team I’ve worked with. Plus, Dr. Hanna did an amazing job with my Breast Augmentation.” – Kristina D.

Masculinizing Bottom Surgery

As a Urologist with comprehensive training in Gender Surgery, Dr. Hanna is uniquely qualified to provide genitourinary reconstruction for transgender men and non-binary people. Dr. Hanna is pleased to offer variations of the Metoidioplasty procedure to suit individual needs. He performs Full Metoidioplasty, also known as Belgrade Metoidioplasty which he learned directly from Dr. Miroslav Djordjevic, as well as Simple Release and Ring Meta. Full Metoidioplasty can be done as a 1-stage procedure that includes Scrotoplasty and placement of Testicular Implants. Dr. Hanna can also provide complimentary procedures to optimize your Metoidioplasty results, such as a Mons Resection (pubic lift), aesthetic revisions and urological repairs.

Dr. Hanna works with a multidisciplinary team that includes experts in gynecology, plastic surgery and microsurgery. He can refer you to a gynecologist for a standalone Hysterectomy, or Hysterectomy can also be performed at the same time as Metoidioplasty.

5 Stars “I had my bottom surgery with Dr. Hanna and I’m glad I did. I have never met such a caring and involved health care professional in my life (and I’ve met a ton). The hospital staff was also amazing, which isn’t surprising as he trained them as well. At both Hanna’s clinic and the hospital I always felt cared for and loved. Although I am still healing, the results of the procedure already look great.” – Jay

Top Surgery Texas

Dr. Hanna offers the Double Incision, Buttonhole and Peri-Areolar methods of Top Surgery. Dr. Hanna will make a recommendation for which method to use based on your surgery goals, as well as chest size and skin elasticity. For those with smaller chests and good skin elasticity, he may recommend Peri-Areolar. Double Incision is great choice for those with larger chests, while Buttonhole is most often performed for those with larger chests who prioritize nipple sensation.

Dr. Hanna will be involved with every aspect of your care from start to finish. Your care will not be transferred to a resident or fellow trainee after surgery. Dr. Hanna will see you post-operatively and follow-up with you for a full year after your surgery.

5 Stars “There are no words I can use to express how euphoric my experience with Dr. Hanna and his team has been! I was always treated with the utmost care, dignity, and humanity. Whenever I had a question I knew I could reach out and have it answered in a timely manner.” – Natalie T.
