The 1-year program’s emphasis is on urethral reconstruction, incontinence, transgender care (including primary gender affirming genital surgeries such as vaginoplasty, metoidioplasty, as well as surgical management of complications associated with gender affirmation surgery), genital reconstruction, as well as neurogenic bladder/cancer survivorship, fistula repair, prosthetics, upper tract reconstruction, and reconstructive techniques using robotic surgery.
In addition to offering primary Metoidioplasty and Vaginoplasty surgeries, Dr. Nikolavsky is also an expert at treating post-operative urinary complications following genital reconstructive surgery.
Reconstructive Urology is a special field in Urology that focuses on returning normal urinary function to affected patients. Conditions like incontinence or urinary obstruction can significantly affect quality of life. The role of the Reconstructive Urologist is to diagnose patients with urinary conditions and present a solution to restore urinary functions.
Common urinary complications after genital reconstructive surgery (GRS) include urethral strictures (blockage), fistulas (abnormal passageways), and abscesses, and it’s not uncommon to have more than one complication concurrently. Dr. Nikolavsky stays up-to-date on current techniques for transgender urology by connecting with GRS surgeons and other Reconstructive Urologists.
Joining Dr. Nikolavsky in offering the highest level of transgender urological care at SUNY Upstate University Hospital is Dr. Stephen A. Blakely. Dr. Blakely is Assistant Professor of Urology at SUNY.
Dr. Nikolavsky can help both trans men and trans women suffering from urinary complications after GRS. Patients should plan on spending 3-4 weeks in the Syracuse area after surgery.
