Dr. Praful Ramineni, MD is a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon with over 15 years of experience. Based in Washington, D.C., Dr. Ramineni performs upwards of 600 surgeries a year and has a specialization in Gender Affirmation Surgery. Recognized for his exceptional surgical skills and natural-looking results, Dr. Ramineni’s patients also praise his friendly, compassionate and professional nature.

Dr. Ramineni started his career as one of the busiest surgeons at MedStar Washington Hospital Center with a focus on complex reconstructive surgery, including cancer and trauma reconstruction, microsurgery and aesthetic surgery. As the Chief of the Division of Plastic Surgery at MedStar, he taught over 100 residents and won numerous teaching awards.

After more than 10 years in academic and research medicine, Dr. Ramineni opened a private practice to provide a more personalized experience for his patients. Approximately 75-95% of Dr. Ramineni’s patients are transgender or non-binary. At District Plastic Surgery, patients are supported and affirmed through every interaction, from consultation through to the final follow-up appointment, and can expect gender-affirming intake forms and staff that has received transgender competency training.

Dr. Ramineni is a member of the American Board of Plastic Surgery, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH).

Feminizing Surgery

Orchiectomy: Orchiectomy is a procedure that removes the testicles, permanently eliminating testosterone production. While Orchiectomy is often done in conjunction with Vaginoplasty, it can also be done as a standalone procedure for those who are not eligible for or interested in Vaginoplasty, or as a preparatory step towards Vaginoplasty.

Vaginoplasty: Dr. Ramineni has a special interest in performing Vaginoplasty, a procedure that creates a functional and aesthetic vagina, as well as labia and a clitoris. Dr. Ramineni’s modified version of Vaginoplasty uses penile, scrotal and peritoneal tissue.

For Vaginoplasty surgery revisions that require depth increases, Dr. Ramineni uses an allograft lining to avoid needing a graft harvest.

Vulvoplasty: This is a minimal depth technique can be performed instead of Vaginoplasty to create labia and a clitoris, but without a vaginal canal, eliminating the dilation regimen that is required with Vaginoplasty.

Facial Feminization: Dr. Ramineni is experienced with the wide spectrum of procedures that feminize facial features, including Hairline Correction, Forehead Recontouring, Brow Lift, Rhinoplasty, Cheek Implants, Lip Lift, Chin Recontouring, Jaw Recontouring and Tracheal Shave.

Masculinizing Surgery

Top Surgery: Dr. Ramineni performs all of the popular methods of Top Surgery, including Double Incision, Peri-Areolar, Keyhole, Inverted-T and Buttonhole. He commonly works with non-binary patients and is pleased to customize the procedure to meet your goals. During your consultation, Dr. Ramineni will offer his professional recommendation as to which method would best suit your preferences, chest size and skin elasticity.

Wait List
The wait time for a consultation is approximately 1-2 weeks. Wait time for a surgery date varies by procedure: 2-3 months following consultation for Vaginoplasty, 2-4 months for Top Surgery and Breast Augmentation.

Traveling to See Dr. Ramineni
Many of Dr. Ramineni’s patients travel to see him from out-of-state. If you’re coming from out-of-state, be sure to ask about discounted hotel rates and remote follow-up care.

Costs, Insurance and Financing
Cost varies by procedure. Exact pricing for paying out-of-pocket can only be determined following a consultation. The price you’ll be quoted will include the cost of the procedure as well as anesthesia, operating room, and any needed post surgical garments.

Dr. Ramineni also accepts CareCredit, a type of medical financing that works much like a credit card.

Dr. Ramineni does not accept Medicaid or Medicare at this time.

Surgery Requirements

  • No BMI requirements.
  • If using insurance, you will need to provide support letters from a mental health expert to your insurance company. Typically, the requirement is one letter for Top Surgery and Breast Augmentation and two letters for Vaginoplasty and Orchiectomy. If paying out of pocket, Dr. Ramineni doesn’t require letters for Top Surgery or Breast Augmentation, but does require one letter for Vaginoplasty and Orchiectomy.
  • Dr. Ramineni will operate on minors with parental consent.
  • For genital surgery, patients should have lived as their preferred gender for at least one year and be 18 years of age or older.
