Dr. Gerhard S. (“Sol”) Mundinger, MD, MBA, is a double board-certified plastic surgeon with extensive training and expertise in craniofacial surgery, microsurgery and gender-affirming surgery. He joined the Austin branch of the Crane Center for Transgender Surgery in 2021, where he offers Top Surgery and Breast Augmentation, Facial Feminization and Vaginoplasty.

Dr. Mundinger completed three undergraduate degrees at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor before pursuing his Medical Doctorate at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. At Johns Hopkins, Dr. Mundinger trained in the Shock Trauma integrated plastic surgery residency program with renowned craniofacial surgeon Dr. Paul Manson. (The Shock-Trauma experience is focused on repairing traumatic deformities, with a heavy emphasis on craniofacial and lower extremity reconstruction.) He then completed two years of training with craniofacial microsurgeon Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez, focusing on face and hand transplantation. Dr. Mundinger also completed a comprehensive craniofacial surgery fellowship with pioneering surgeons Dr. Joseph Gruss and Dr. Richard Hopper at Seattle Children’s Hospital / Harborview Medical Center in Washington.

Before joining the Crane Center, Dr. Mundinger was the Director of Plastic Surgery and the Craniofacial Center Director at the Children’s Hospital of New Orleans, and Associate Plastic Surgery Residency Director at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. During his time in academic practice, Dr. Mundinger sought additional training in Facial Feminization Surgery with FacialTeam in Marbella, Spain.

Dr. Mundinger is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Dr. Mundinger founded the NOLA Transgender Institute in 2018 to help improve access to experienced, quality care for transgender patients in New Orleans and the Gulf South. In 2021, he joined the Crane Center to focus on Gender Surgery. Dr. Mundinger performs numerous gender-affirming procedures, including Top Surgery, Facial Feminization, Tracheal Shave, Breast Augmentation, Orchiectomy and Vaginoplasty.

Top Surgery: Double Incision and Keyhole techniques.

Facial Feminization Surgery: Hairline Correction, Forehead Contouring, Brow Lift, Cheek Augmentation, Rhinoplasty, Lip Augmentation, Chin Contouring, Jaw Contouring, Tracheal Shave (Thyroid Cartilage Reduction).

Breast Augmentation: For a more feminine breast contour, silicone or saline breast implants can be inserted through an incision under the breast, in the armpit, or around the nipple.

Feminizing Genital Surgery: Removing the testicles (Orchiectomy), and creation of a vulva without a vaginal canal (Vulvoplasty), Penile Inversion method of creating a vagina (Vaginoplasty).

Dr. Mundinger operates at Arise Austin Medical Center and Westlake Hills Surgery Center, both in Austin, Texas.

Surgery Requirements
Dr. Mundinger is a member of WPATH and follows WPATH guidelines for surgery. You will need to provide:

  • Two referrals from qualified mental health professionals for genital procedures; one referral for other procedures unless otherwise specified by insurance.
  • A letter from your hormone specialist stating you have been on 12 months of continuous hormones for genital procedures, unless clinically contraindicated.

Additionally, patients must be 18+ years of age.

Financing & Insurance
Dr. Mundinger accepts credit/debit cards, cashier’s check, money order, wire transfer and medical financing via CareCredit. He also accepts insurance and is in-network with Cigna PPO, Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO, Commercial United Healthcare PPO, and Employer Health Network (Whole Foods). The Crane Center has also had success billing as an out-of-network provider with Aetna, Group Health, Harvard Pilgrim, HealthPartners and Medica.

Dr. Mundinger does not work with the following insurance providers: Medicare, Medicaid, Tri-Care, Kaiser, Ambetter and Oscar Health.

Booking a Consultation
Dr. Mundinger is available for phone or in-person consultations in Austin. If insurance is out-of-network, then the cost of the consultation is $200. If in-network, the consultation fee is the specialist co-pay. An in-person consultation is not required for booking a surgery date.

Current wait list: 4-6 weeks for a consultation, 5-6 weeks for a surgery date (after all requirements, such as letters and hair removal, are met.)
